What is Future Friendly?
P&G Future Friendly is a program that empowers consumers to save energy, save water and reduce waste, using science, innovation and unique partnerships to achieve meaningful environmental impacts. The P&G Future Friendly program is a direct extension of P&G’s long-term commitment and disciplined, science-based approach to environmental sustainability. Through the program, P&G is better able to share these solutions with consumers so they can realize the benefits in their own homes. Sustainability is core to P&G’s Purpose to Touch and Improve the Lives of the Worlds’ Consumers, now and for generations to come.
What is the Future Friendly mission?
We strive to reduce waste, water, energy, and CO2 through systemic conservation efforts when creating all of our products. We apply smart eco-design through innovative construction process improvements. We reuse otherwise discarded materials, giving new life to what was once waste where feasible. Our sustainable manufacturing practices have accomplished four significant ecological benefits so far. Since 2002, P&G operations have reduced, per unit of production, water consumption by 52 percent, energy usage by 48 percent, CO2 emissions by 52 percent and waste disposal by 53 percent.
Who created the Future Friendly program ?
The Future Friendly program is a direct extension of P&G’s long-term commitment and disciplined, science-based approach to environmental innovation. Every day we seek to reduce our own environmental impact by working with our employees, business partners and established experts to minimize our energy, waste and water use. In fact, since 2002 we have reduced our energy, waste and water by more than 40 percent. Through the Future Friendly program we are better able to share some of these solutions with consumers so they can realize the same benefits in their own homes.
What guidelines are used to determine if a product is Future Friendly?
All Future Friendly products meet strict, science-based performance criteria and represent the value, convenience and innovation consumers expect from us. The criteria for Future Friendly products include:
• Deliver a meaningful environmental benefit in one or more of the following categories: energy, water or waste.
• These reductions and environmental benefits must be supported by sound, transparent science and substantiated data.
Are Future Friendly products new or are they existing brands wrapped in a different packaging?
These are known brands that consumers trust to deliver value, convenience and performance. The Future Friendly program is designed to make it easier for our consumers to find, select and use everyday products and take other steps that will help reduce the use of energy, waste and water. All products included meet strict, science-based performance criteria and come directly from our disciplined, science-based approach to environmental innovation.
Have any third party organizations endorsed the Future Friendly program? Have retailers been involved in its development?
We are working with a number of outside experts to help bring the Future Friendly Program to market. Please see the "our partners" section of this site for more information.
Will the current economic environment cause P&G to rethink new sustainability programs like Future Friendly?
P&G’s commitment to sustainability is an integral aspect of how we conduct business. While we may revise from time to time the way we communicate and commercialize this commitment, our long-term sustainability vision remains unchanged. In 2010, we unveiled our long-term environmental sustainability vision. As part of our strategy to grow responsibly we will work towards a long-term environmental sustainability vision that includes:

• Powering our plants with 100% renewable energy
• Using 100% renewable or recycled materials for all products and packaging
• Having zero consumer and manufacturing waste go to landfills
• Designing products that delight consumers while maximizing the conservation of resources

How does the Future Friendly program support P&G’s overall sustainability commitments?
Future Friendly is a key part of our commitment to improve lives every day, now and for generations to come. Our opportunity to touch and improve lives comes with a responsibility to do so in a way that preserves the planet and improves the communities in which we live and work. Future Friendly is one way we help our consumers make decisions that can help lessen their impact on the environment.

We have had a structured corporate sustainability program in place for decades. We pioneered environmental reporting in the 70s, introduced eco-efficiency in the mid-80s when we launched compact detergents, and have been producing an annual sustainability report since 1999. In 2007, we changed the Company’s Statement of Purpose to incorporate sustainability, and also included a specific new principle that we will “incorporate sustainability in our products, packaging and operations”. This was a deliberate and explicit step to show our commitment to sustainability.

In 2010 we announced a long-term environmental sustainability vision.
In order to make substantive progress toward this vision, we have established 2020 goals for both our products and our operations. To learn more visit  www.pg.com/sustainability.

Most recently we partnered with the Alliance to Save Energy in committing to reach 100 million U.S. households by Earth Day 2013 with the information needed to convert from warm/hot water laundry habits to cold water washing. This campaign will help us realized our goal of converting 70 percent of total global washing machine loads to cold water washing by 2020.

Shouldn’t all P&G products be considered “Future Friendly”? Are other P&G products less safe for the environment?
Every product we sell around the world is safe for consumers. In fact, more than 500 full-time personnel worldwide work hard to ensure human and environmental safety for the consumers who use our products nearly 3 billion times a day as well as for the more than 130,000 employees who bring these innovations to the global marketplace. The Future Friendly program is designed specifically to further extend the economic value of our most popular brands by helping consumers improve household efficiency in areas like energy, water and waste management. These three areas represent some of the most difficult environmental sustainability challenges we face today, which is why we are working with our partners and other experts to make it even easier for consumers take small steps that can add up to big impacts in their home and for our planet.
